Renewable Energy Programs

The Georgia Legislature addressed environmentally sound energy solutions in the passage of Senate Bill 93 in 2001. In early 2001, the Commission addressed Green Pricing in Docket No. 13305-U: Georgia Power Company's Application for Approval of an Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) filed pursuant to O.C.G.A. § 46-3A-1 et seq. In its Final Order the Commission directed Georgia Power to file a proposed Green Energy Program that would allow green energy to be purchased by its customers at an established price but would not impact bills of customers who chose not to participate. In 2003, the Commission approved a Green Energy program for Georgia Power Company in Docket No. 16573.

Effective January 2017, Georgia Power's Green Energy program ended and the Simple Solar Program began. The Simple Solar Program enables customers to support and foster the growth of solar energy in Georgia by Georgia Power purchasing and retiring Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) generated from solar energy resources on the customer’s behalf. The one cent per kWh charge is in addition to the customer’s normal cost of electricity and, per the customer’s election, will apply to either 50% or 100% of the customer’s monthly energy usage.

Other options for Georgia Power customers include the Community Solar, Commercial and Industrial, and Renewable / Non-Renewable Programs.

In 2012, Georgia Power initiated its Advanced Solar Initiative (ASI) to procure up to 210 Megawatts (MW) of renewable resources through a combination of Utility Scale and Distributed Generation (DG) Request For Proposals (RFPs) and application processes. Building off of the ASI Program, ASI Prime, which was approved in Georgia Power's 2013 IRP, sought to add an additional 525 MW of renewable resources. As ordered by the Commission in Georgia Power's 2016 IRP, Georgia Power will be adding significantly more renewable resources through the Renewable Energy Development Initiative (REDI). Procurement for the REDI resources is currently ongoing and will add up to 1200 MW of additional renewable resources to Georgia Power's resource mix (1,050 MW Utility Scale, 150 MW DG) by 2021.
