The Georgia Public Service Commission wants to make sure that eligible senior citizens are aware that they can receive a
discount on their gas, electric and telephone bills in the form of a "senior citizen discount" or, in the case of telephone
bills, "lifeline assistance." Following are the criteria for qualifying to receive a senior citizens discount for the various
industries:
|
Telephone |
If you receive Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Food Stamps, Medicaid, or a
senior citizen discount offered by the local gas or power company, then you may receive up to a $9.25 credit on your local
monthly telephone bill. This credit is provided through a program called "Lifeline Assistance Program."
|
|
Investor-Owned Electric |
Customers of Georgia Power Company who are 65 years of age or older with a total household income of $23,540, or less, per year qualify to receive this discount. The monthly discount of $18.00 is applied to the customer’s pre-fuel monthly bill amount. Also, seniors who get this discount will receive up to a $6.00 per month fuel credit to their bills. The electric service must be individually metered and in the senior’s name.

|
|
Investor-Owned Natural Gas |
Customers with a total household income of $24,980 or less and are 65 years of age or older qualify to receive up to a $14.00 credit to their bill. Also, the bill must be in the name of the senior who applies for the discount. The credit is applied to the Atlanta Gas Light Company base charge portion of the bill.

If you are a Liberty Utilities customer who is 65 years of age or older with a total household income of $24,980 or less per year, then
you are eligible to receive a waiver of the monthly customer charge (currently, $19.76). Liberty Utilities serves the Columbus and
