Commissioners Ex Officio

In 1998, two Georgia Public Service Commissioners, Mac Barber and Dave Baker, left their positions in public service in order to pursue other endeavors:

Mac Barber

Mac Barber resigned his position as Commissioner on May 1, 1998 to run for the office of Lieutenant Governor. Prior thereto, Barber had been elected to five terms on the Commission. During his tenure, he was recognized by the Legislature for his efforts in protecting the rights of consumers. Mr. Barber has been acknowledged on numerous occasions as an advocate for the elderly, children and the poor by organizations such as the Georgia Association of Educators, the Georgia Science and Technology Commission, Emory University’s Kappa Phi Kappa Literary Society and the National Association of Retired People. Following his resignation, Lauren "Bubba" McDonald, Jr. was appointed by Governor Zell Miller and subsequently elected to serve out the remainder of Mr. Barber’s term on the Commission.

Dave Baker

Dave Baker resigned his position as Commissioner on November 30, 1998 to accept employment as Vice President of Legal Affairs at MindSpring Enterprises, Inc. Since being elected to a seat on the Commission in 1994, Mr. Baker gained national recognition as a staunch proponent of telecommunications competition. While serving on the Commission, he was appointed by the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners to its Communications Committee and was chosen as one of four state commissioners nationwide to serve on the Federal-State Universal Service Joint Board. As of December 31, 1998, a successor to Mr. Baker had not been appointed.

The Georgia Public Service Commission is grateful to Mac Barber and Dave Baker for the many contributions that each made during his respective term in office.
